Pyramid at Chichén Itzá: Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

One of the top tourist hotspots in the world, Chichen Itza is the most famous temple city built in Yucatan, Mexico by the Maya civilization. This impressive archaeological site served as the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization and rose to prominence in 600 AD. "Chichen Itza" literally means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza" and consists of numerous splendid stone architectures of which the magnificent Kukulkan Pyramid occupies the centre stage. Known locally as “El Castillo” (the castle), the Kukulkan Pyramid has recently been voted as one of the new seven wonders of the world and is actually a temple dedicated to Kukulkan, the Plumed Serpent. Every year in the fall and spring equinox, during the rising and setting of the sun, the side of the building casts a shadow which appears as a plumed snake along the steps of the structure.

Machu Picchu, Cuzco (Peru)

A marvellous Latin-American construction, the Machu Picchu is an ancient fortress city of the Incas situated in the Andes Mountains, south-central Peru. Also known as "The Lost City of the Incas", the construction of Machu Picchu began around 1430 AD during the glorious days of the Inca Empire but was abandoned in the 16th century at the time of Spanish invasion. The site was rediscovered by U.S. explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. The architecture has been constructed with polished dry-stone walls and consists of several buildings, primary of which are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows.

Roman Colosseum, Rome (Italy)

The Colosseum of Rome is considered to be one of the greatest pieces of Roman architecture. A marvellous specimen of Roman engineering, the Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre situated in the centre of Rome. The biggest amphitheatre ever to be built in Rome, it has a capacity of 50,000 spectators and was primarily used for gladiatorial contests, royal speeches and dramatic performances. The construction of the Colosseum began between 70 and 72 AD under emperor Vespasian and ended in 80 AD during the time of Titus. Some changes were, however, made later during the rule of Emperor Domitian. Made of travertine stone and iron clamps, the Colosseum today attracts millions of visitors in Rome annually. In recent years, it has become a sign of the international campaign against capital punishment as well as a symbol of Roman Christianity. Every Good Friday, the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession around the various levels of the amphitheatre. The image of this magnificent structure can also be found on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.

Christ Redeemer: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Undoubtedly a modern marvel, "Christ the Redeemer" ("O Cristo Redentor" in Portuguese) is a statue of Jesus Christ that weighs 635 tons, stands 98 ft (30 m) wide and 120 ft (38 m) high with its pedestal. Constructed of reinforced concrete and soapstone, this wonderful piece of architecture is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the top of the Corcovado mountain (2,300 ft) in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. It was in 1921 that the Catholic Circle of Rio proposed for the construction of the statue which received acceptance. The statue was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa, a local engineer, and sculpted by French sculptor Paul Landowski. The whole structure took nine years to be completed, from 1922 to 1931, and was opened on October 12, 1931. The cost of construction was $250,000, which came from donations by Brazilian Catholics, collected by the Catholic Circle of Rio. The statue depicts Jesus Christ with his head bent and arms stretched wide open, a stance that reminds of the crucifixion that the messiah underwent to propagate his message of peace to us. It is a significant symbol of Brazil's Christianity.

Petra: Jordan

The most popular spot of Jordan, the Petra is an ancient rock city that contains about 800 magnificent rock structures including a mausoleum, a two-storeyed temple, a shrine, a palace, general dwellings and a royal treasury - the "Khazneh elFarun" - which is the most popular of all the buildings. This beautiful city was carved out of rocks and inhabited by the Nabataeans more than 500 years before Christ's birth. These industrious Arab people turned it into an important business center and Petra quickly became an important trade route linking the Asian countries with the south Arabian nations Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. The city was later under the domination of the Crusaders which ended with the Muslim conquest. But then Petra was completely abandoned and rediscovered only in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

Tajmahal (Agra, India)

The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra.  It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal is regarded as a perfect jewel of Muslim art in India. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 42-acre complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides.

Great Wall of China: China

The Great Wall of China is built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. It  is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials.  Especially famous is the wall built 220–206 BCE by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced; the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty.

Trick to add time (For Numerical Aptitude section)

Hi friends, while solving examples from clocks, some people find it hard to add hours and minutes together. So we have come up with a method to do the same.

Let's add 2 hr and 35 minutes and 4 hr 55 minutes together.
Process to do is,
Think the 2 hr 35 minutes as one number, which will give us 235 and do the same for the other number, 4 hours 55 minutes, giving us 455.
Now add these two numbers together:
235 + 455 = 690.

What you need to do next is,  add the time constant of 40 to the result.
690 + 40 = 730
So we can now see our answer is 7 hrs and 30 minutes!

Remember to add 40 to the sum, regardless of given quantity. This trick will save your time during your upcoming Railway NTPC and SSC examination.

10 difference between IBPS ans SSC Exams & Jobs, You must know

Ultimate guide to solve all the "Ice cube melting in Water" questions

You must have read some questions based on "effects of an Ice cube on the water levels", in your SSC, Railway NTPC, Railway JE SSE or any other examination where physics is asked in GK section. We will discuss here the basic theory of "Melting ice and its effects on water levels".

First let's understand two Archimedes' Principles:

1. Any floating object displaces a volume of water equal in weight to the object's MASS.

2. Any submerged object displaces a volume of water equal to the object's VOLUME.

Also, recall formula of density = Mass / Volume.

Now let's take the first problem. If we have placed an ice cube in a glass of water, and the cup is full of water up to the brim, then as the ice melts what will happen to the water level? will water overflow from the cup?

Based on the first principle, an ice cube is floating and it has displaced an amount of water which has similar mass ( or weight) as of mass of ice cube. (Read this twice if needed)
So let's say the ice cube is of  25 gram then 25 gram of water has been moved by an ice cube. ( or there will be space for 25 gram of water in the glass if we remove the ice!!!!)

If you have understood the above properly then let's see another interesting property of water and ice. Water is one of the very few materials that have a lesser density in its solid form. Did you get the last sentence? Recall your experience with refrigerator, we fill the ice tray (or some other pot ) full of water to the brim level, and when we take out the ice, the ice will come slightly over the brim. This means that while we convert water to ice, the volume increases. (to check this phenomenon, take some metallic pot with a smaller opening and fill it full and check the results. make sure to fill it fully after putting in the refrigerator).

Ice has a density of 0.92 grams /cm3 while water has 1 grams/cm3. Let's get back to the question, what will happen to the water level? The answer is the water level will get unchanged because when the ice melts its density increases, and the melted water volume is exactly equal to the amount of water displaced by ice.

Probability (Quantitative Aptitude) For Competitive Exams



Welcome to the interesting lesson of Probability in quantitative aptitude or numeric ability section.

We use probability in routine life daily, Probability is simply a chance of happening of some event. If one of you friend always come late, then the probability of him coming on time today is very less. This is a generic simple understanding, but in mathematical terms, we define the probability of occurrence of some event by a number between 0 and 1. Here 0 means the event will not occur and 1 means the event will definitely occur.

Before moving deeper, let me introduce you a term Sample Space(S). When we perform some experiment, then set of all the possible outcomes(results) is called Sample Space(S). 

so, for coin Sample space S={H,T}
For two coins tossed simultaneously S={HH, HT, TH, TH}
For rolling a dice, S={1,2,3,4,5,6}

Simply sample space is a list of all the possible results, and Event is any one or more than one result from sample space. (Event = H, HH, HT, 1,3,...)

1. Probability of occurrence of single event

Let's take a simple example to understand the concept. Suppose you are tossing a coin, then there will be either head or tail. The probability of coming head or tail is 0.5.

Now probability = Number of ways an event can occur / Total Events or Sample Space

P(E) = n(E) / n(S)

P(Head)= 1/2 = 0.5

n(E) = Number of ways head can occur means 1.
n(S)= Total Events means 2, head or tail

Another thing to note P(head)0.5 + P(Tail) 0.5= 1
If we add the probability of all the events the answer should be 1.

Let's take another example of dice.

While rolling a dice, we have six outcomes S={1,2,3,4,5,6}. What is a chance of coming 2 on the top face while rolling a dice. Here a dice is unbiased, and each face is likely to have the same probability of occurrence, so the probability of any particular number is 1/6.
Here n(S)=6, and n(E)=1.

2. Probability of occurrence of two or more event in single experiment

So far we were trying to calculate the probability of a single outcome/event. What if we want to find the probability of two, three or more outcomes together?

In the above dice example, suppose we want to find the probability of getting a multiple of 3 on the top face. Multiple of 3 in the dice are 3 and 6. we can solve this in two ways,

One way is to find the n(E), here we have two results 3 & 6 so n(E) will be 2. while n(S) is 6. putting them in the probability equation,

P(E) = n(E)/n(S) = 2/6 =1/3

Another way to solve is, to add the individual probability of both the events 3 & 6.

Probability of Multiple of 3 = P(3) + P(6) = 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6.

3. Probability of occurrence of events in two independent experiment

We have already learned how to calculate the probability of occurrence of events in the single experiment, withing next few minutes you will be able to master this topic. 

Now suppose we take one unbiased coin and one dice, and while throwing them simultaneously we want to find the probability of coming head on the coin and 3 on the dice. We already know that probability of coming head is 1/2, and the probability of coming 3 on top face of the dice is 1/6.

Now that coin and dice are a completely independent event, means there is no relation between coming head and 3, to find the combined probability we will multiply the independent probabilities.

Probability of coming head and 3 = P(head) * P(3) = 1/2 * 1/6 = 1/12

Wow! So now you can not only add but also multiply probabilities. But how do you know when to add or multiply probabilities?

Well, in the first example we had to find the probability of coming 3 or 6 on the top face of dice. In this case, either event alone would have occurred. In such cases, we simply add the individual probabilities.

On the other hand, in the second example, both the events needed to occur (head and 3 simultaneously). In such cases, we need to multiply the probabilities.

4. Probability of dependent events.

Suppose we are presented with 10 balls, five of which are black while the other five are white. What will be the probability of picking a black ball?

There are total of 10 balls and thus, there are 10 possible outcomes.

Now, let us denote the event of picking a black ball as A.

Hence, P(Black Ball) = P(A) = 5/10 = 0.5

Now comes the interesting part. Suppose you did pick a Black Ball at random. Now, you are left with 9 balls, 5 white and 4 black (because you have removed one Black Ball).

Now, if you had to pick one more ball from these 9, what would be the probability of picking one black ball?

P(Black Ball now) = 4/9 = 0.44

We can see that the probability changed in this case because the second event is actually dependent on the first event. This is called a dependent event.

Let's name the second event as event B. In this case, P(B|A) denotes the probability of the occurrence of B when A has already occurred.

Hence, P (second Black Ball) = P(B|A) = 0.44

In the above example, what would be the probability of selecting a Black Ball in the first try and selecting a Black Ball again in the second try?

We already know the probability of picking a Black Ball in the first try = P(red book) = P(A) = 5/10

and, P (second red book) = P(B|A) = 4/9

Now, since both the events must occur, this case requires a multiplication of the two probabilities.

Thus, P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B|A)

= 5/10 * 4/9 = 20/90

Note the formula: P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B|A)
