Use of English Prepositions for IBPS & Other Government Exams

1. About : In various places concerning

• The tools and other thing have been lying about the workshop.
• She is very particular about her health.

2. Across : From side to side, on the other side of

• There is a bridge across the river.
• The post-office is just across the street.

3. After : following in time, next in order, in pursuit [with 'take' ] resemble in features

• After dinner, we had some rest.
• Monday comes after Sunday.
• The police are after the gang.
• Reeta takes after her father.

4. Against : Indicating opposition indication collision

• Reeta was married against her father's will.
• He hit his head against the wall as it was too dark inside.

5. Along : From one end to the other end of

• We drove along the road.

6. At : indicating place and direction

• Mr. Modi is at his office.
• You can buy the medicine at the chemist's.

7. Before : Earlier then, in front of, (in order) etc.

• Before Christmas, we had a tough time.
• Your turn comes before mine.

8. Behind : In, at or to the rear of, etc.

• The dog is sitting behind the door.

9. Below : Opposite of above, lower then, etc.

• Where shall I sign above the line or below the line?
• The temperature has gone down below the freezing point.

10. Beneath : Below, underneath, etc.

• The submarine can remain beneath the surface.

11. Between : Refers to two limits, etc.

• I have my lunch between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock.
• Divide the profit between you.

12. Beyond : At the farther side of, surpassing, etc.

• He stays in the house beyond the hills.
• Your work is beyond all praise.

13. For : Indicating destination, intended for something or somebody, purpose, the extent in time, to                  the amount or extent of, etc.

• My brother left for Calcutta in the morning.
• The servant brought tea for us.
• We read books for pleasure.
• I will be with you for half an hour.
• His new bungalow was sold for I million.

14. From : Indicating the starting point (place, time, person) process, change, prevention, escape, etc.

• The factory has been closed from last month to this day.
• Good pupils do not stay away from school for petty reasons.
• Wine is made from grapes.
• He is prevented from entering the premises.

15. In : Used with places, direction, time, dress, physical surroundings, condition; to indicate                            inclusion of somebody or something etc.

• He is employed in an office (in the service of the ministry of Education).
• The pupils are dressed in school uniform.
• We have kept plants in the verandah.
• Our uncle has settled in Bombay.
• The car he has bought is in good order.

16. Into : Motion to a point within, change from one condition to another

• He jumped into the river.
• Get into the car.
• She burst into tears.

17. Of : Indicates origin, connection, inclusion, relief, material, etc.

• A crowd of people gathered at the spot of the accident.
• In the office, there is a very good portrait of Gandhiji hung on the wall.
• The furniture in my house is made of wood.

18. On : Occupying a part of a surface, concerning, indicating time, etc.

• The picture is given on page five.
• There are some antiques on top of the cupboard.
• Mr. Modi is returning from the UK on the 5th of next month.
• Government servants go on holiday once a year.

19. Over : Converting some surface, even little higher to the other side, indicating superiority

• He spread a piece of cloth over the food to keep the flies off.
• The plane flew over the city.
• It rained heavily all over India this year.
• An emotional person has no command over himself.

20. Through : From end to end, examine, pass, etc.

• The postman threw the letters through the slit in the door.
• The lawyer went through all the papers of the case.
• He got through his final exams this year.

21. To : Towards, in the direction of from beginning to end, indicating ratio, reference, the final point in the duration of time.

• My father went to the office early today.
• I stood, in the pouring rain, so I was wet to the skin.
• He works from morning to night.
• I request your reference to my letter in this connection.

22. With : Having, carrying, indicating the means, accompaniment of relationship, manner,                 indicating care, charge, possession.

• I went to the pictures with my parents.
• Mark the important point with a pencil.
• A girl with blond hair has been arrested for smuggling drugs into the country.
• He has a lot of money with him.
• Let the child go with her mother.
• We must do our duty with joy.
